dc.descriptionStructural mechanics of yarns are related to the fundamental building blocks for many fibre-based materials. The formation of loops and tight ‘snarls’ is of particular importance in many areas from the finest filaments to undersea cables as such effects are difficult to predict and lead to weakening of the structures. This study (3 papers in all) formed part of the theoretical work which was evaluated by colleagues at St Petersburg State University of Technology & Design (reported in parts 2 and 3); it established methods for characterising and predictive modelling ‘snarling’ and associated properties.en
