dc.descriptionThis paper demonstrates a high level of international collaboration and academic research addressing an innovative enzyme modification. The modification of enzymes enables the exact location of proteolytic reaction on wool to be controlled, leading to the successful development of machine washable wool. This novel technology was transferred into industrial practice following successful evaluation. This breakthrough of new technology overcomes the environmental problems associated with wool finishing using conventional chlorination/polymer methods. The impacts on the enzyme and textile industries and the environment are significant. The work illustrates successful international collaboration within the EU PROTEX project coordinated by Shen.en
