This paper seeks to establish a morally appropriate balance between the various moral standards that are in tension in the field of Electronic Patient Records. It was the first academic paper to address this sensitive ICT application from a moral philosophy perspective. The paper is founded on the invited submission by the authors to the European Group on Ethics in Science and New Technologies in its compilation of Opinion 13 - Ethical Issues of Healthcare in The Information Society. The opinion has subsequently influenced European regulation and policy regarding health informatics and associated personal health data.en
