    Abstract
This chapter examines the rise of the Tea Party movement in the US during the early days of the Obama administration. The contradictions, conflicts and energy of this mixed bag of conservatives, libertarians and evangelicals are analysed. The movement is considered in the context of a wider narrative relating to the history of the paranoid style in American politics, as defined by Richard Hofstadter.
