Faculty of Technology


Research in the Faculty of Technology has an international standing and provides diverse, exciting and hugely interdisciplinary area of study. Strong links with commerce ensure research is geared towards real-life challenges, and projects cover subjects as diverse as medical diagnostics, robotics, satellite mapping, home security, 3D television, aircraft manufacturing and safety, mobile communication and alternative energy.

The Faculty consists of four departments: The Departments of Engineering and of Media Technology focus on micro/electronics, imaging technologies, communications, water software, mechatronics, mechanical engineering and manufacture, whilst the Departments of Informatics and of Computer Technology are concerned with research surrounding computational intelligence, interactive media, software technology, satellite remote sensing and computing and social responsibility.

Computing and Engineering technologies influence all aspects of modern life, which is why the Faculty is actively involved in a number of important cross-faculty research endeavours, such as the Institute of Creative Technologies. The Faculty also has a number of Special Interest Groups (SIGs), which act as a catalyst for interdisciplinary research. These include the Entertainment Computing SIG, the Forensic Computing SIG and the Pedagogic SIG.
