dc.description The assessment of aircraft noise is becoming an increasingly important task in ensuring sustainable airport development. Traditional laboratory models are not sufficient to assess the exposure to noisy flights of specific local communities in proximity to an airport. An integration of neural networks, fuzzy sets and geographical information systems is given to provide an alternative method. This has laid a solid foundation for neural networks and fuzzy sets to be applied to the environmental evaluation of airport operations where huge uncertainties and complex interactions exist. This approach could be applied to other environmental monitoring fields such as harbours. en
